The fate of the Reiter family – in brief
Adolf Reiter, born Abraham Eber Spund-Reiter in Galicia, founded the ‘Kaufhaus Adolf Reiter’ department stores‘ in Hof in 1902. He sold household and luxury goods there and acquired Bavarian citizenship in 1912. After the National Socialists came to power, his sons left Germany: Julius, Bruno, and Kurt fled to London in 1933 to escape anti-Semitic persecution, while Leo later emigrated to Brazil. Adolf, his wife Sabine, and their youngest son Erich initially remained in Hof, where Adolf was increasingly persecuted and even imprisoned, which also severely affected his health. Following the November pogroms in 1938, they too fled to England. Adolf died there in 1939, Sabine in 1957. Their children built new lives abroad.
