The fate of the Heymann family – in brief
Max Heymann ran a shoe shop in Hof from 1912 and was active in the local community. However, he became a victim of anti-Semitic persecution by the National Socialists early on, which led to a boycott of his business. After the economic ruin, the family moved into a flat above the synagogue. Their son Siegfried emigrated to the USA in 1936. The family was temporarily arrested during the November pogroms of 1938. In 1940, they were deported to the Gurs internment camp in France. Max died in the Nexon camp in 1942, while his son Walter was murdered in Auschwitz in 1943. Ella Heymann survived and emigrated to the USA after the war.
