Schicksale jüdischer Hofer

Few people today are aware that numerous places, buildings, houses, squares in our hometown Hof were places of persecution and the incipient extermination of Jewish fellow citizens – but in the years before also places of Jewish life, work, economic activity, learning, family happiness and familily suffering, in short: Jewish normality.

In the context of the students’ contest “Schicksale der jüdischen Hofer” (Fates of the Jewish citizens of Hof), which was announced by the Hermann- und Bertl-Müller-Stiftung in 2018, we – the team “Schule ohne Rassismus” (school without racism) of the Schiller-Gymnasium Hof – have made it our task to deal with this little-known history of the families of Jewish citizens of Hof and to make it accessible to as wide an audience as possible through our web-app.  Our research was based on the book “Jüdische Familien in Hof a.d. Saale” (“Jewish Families in Hof a.d. Saale”) by Ekkehard Hübschmann, published in 2019.

We have linked life stories, family trees and photographs of the four families Heymann, Lax & Lump, Reiter and Franken on a city map, with which we would like to inspire you to take a thematic walk through Hof’s old town. The website is also open for all further contributions of the contest, which can be linked or posted here.

Another access to our city tour are QR codes which are attached to the houses where the families lived or worked. They are intended to guide interested walkers to the texts and pictures of the respective families on our website. We would like to thank all house and shop owners for whom the application of the code was a matter of course. Unfortunately this was not the case with all of them!

We wish you an interesting and informative walk through Hof!
